Background of the Study:
Indigenous women have historically played influential roles in the traditional governance structures of Obubra Local Government, contributing to community decision-making and cultural continuity. Despite prevailing patriarchal norms, women have served as custodians of cultural knowledge, conflict mediators, and key players in resource management (Okon, 2023). Their involvement has been critical to maintaining social balance and ensuring the transmission of indigenous values (Ekaette, 2024). However, modernization and evolving socio-political dynamics have challenged these traditional roles, often marginalizing indigenous women in formal governance processes. This study examines the evolving role of indigenous women in traditional governance, assessing how they balance cultural expectations with contemporary demands and the impact of their leadership on community cohesion (Mfon, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite significant contributions, indigenous women in Obubra face challenges in traditional governance due to modern socio-political dynamics and persistent gender biases. Their roles are increasingly undermined by contemporary administrative structures that do not fully recognize the value of traditional female leadership (Okon, 2023). This study aims to evaluate these challenges and examine the impact of indigenous women’s participation in traditional governance (Ekaette, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the role of indigenous women in traditional governance.
To identify challenges hindering their effective participation.
To recommend strategies for enhancing the influence of indigenous women in traditional governance.
Research Questions:
What roles do indigenous women play in traditional governance in Obubra?
What challenges affect their participation in decision-making processes?
How can their roles be strengthened in the context of modern governance?
Research Hypotheses:
Indigenous women significantly contribute to community decision-making.
Modern governance structures limit the participation of indigenous women.
Empowerment initiatives can enhance the role of indigenous women in traditional governance.
Significance of the Study:
This study provides insights into the critical role of indigenous women in traditional governance. Its findings will help inform policies to empower these women and preserve cultural leadership within the community (Okon, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Obubra Local Government, Cross River State, focusing solely on the role of indigenous women in traditional governance structures. Limitations include reliance on historical records and subjective cultural accounts.
Definitions of Terms:
Indigenous Women: Native women who actively participate in cultural and governance practices.
